NowPublic is looking for interns!

Want to develop your skills in new media? Interested in helping to shape the future of news? Live in the Vancouver area?

NowPublic.com is the world’s largest participatory news network and an Emmy-nominated leader in crowd-powered media. We’re looking for interns with a passion for social media, online news, and the real-time web to work in NowPublic’s head offices.

NowPublic’s internship program is a minimum 3-month commitment of 16-20 hours per week. Interns will work closely with NowPublic’s Editorial Team to produce and promote NowPublic content across the social web; recruit new site members; source multimedia content for featured news coverage; and contribute news stories to the site. This is an unpaid position.

Interns are expected to have working knowledge of social networking and an understanding of how to manage feedback from online sources.

Qualifications:

· Strong communication skills

· Experience with social media and networks, including: Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and social bookmarking sites

· Experience in the blogosphere and writing for the web would be an asset

· A good eye for newsworthy photos and video

· A pro-active and flexible approach to work

· An eagerness to learn about social news and community building

To participate in the Intern program you should:

· Be available a minimum of 16-20 hours per week

· Be willing to commit to a 3 month program

· Have a laptop computer

· Be able to legally work in Canada; non-Canadians must hold a valid student work visa or equivalent

Michael Tippett, Founder & President, NowPublic

An Emmy nominee and successful entrepreneur for almost two decades, Tippett is recognized an as international expert on emerging news models.  In 2005, Tippett co-founded NowPublic.  The company has been named one of the top five most useful new sites on the web by The Guardian and Time magazine named it one of the Top 50 Websites for 2007.

In 1995, Tippett founded the WebPool Syndicate, one of Canada’s first Internet companies.  After the success of the WebPool venture, Tippett travelled to the United States and worked for some of the largest web companies in North America, including TheGlobe.com, Afternic and Register.com.

Outside of his role at NowPublic, Tippett is a member of the University of British Columbia’s School of Journalism Advisory Board, Capilano University, Bachelor of Professional Communication Advisory Committee and is also a board member of CABINET, a Vancouver-based arts organization.  He is also an advisor to The Wireless Innovation Network British Columbia (WINBC).

He has also contributed to digital culture in fields such as media arts. In 2004 he collaborated with Kate Armstrong to produce Grafik Dynamo, a net art piece that loads live images from blogs and news sources on the web into a live action comic strip. Grafik Dynamo was a commission of Turbulence, made possible with funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Tippett graduated from Queen’s University with a degree in Philosophy.
